OpenSolaris

Finally accessing extra

To acccess the OpenSolaris extra repository you have to login to pkg.sun.com and fetch two certificates, that you have to add to the pkg system. Now I have a problem with my Sun Account, so I cannot login to pkg.sun.com. I don't know why and Sun don't know either. They investigating the problem for a month now.

After I asked them in my last amail if they can't just send me those certificates I need, I received an email today that they can. The two certificates were attached to the email, as well as instructions on how to use them.

Sure it would have been great when my account just worked or at least if they had this idea themselves. But after all I can now access extra and work with it.

Using QQ without Windows

About a year ago I wrote about QQ with Kopete. It didn't work at that time and it does not work now. As I switched to OpenSolaris and KDE is not really usable here, I switched to Gnome, too. And so I switched to Pidgin, too.

I miss some Kopete features, but other things work better in Pidgin. Sadly I QQ is not one of them. So QQ is neither working in Kopete nor in Pidgin. Is there any working open implementation of a chat client for QQ out there?

I understand that even Chinese people are using MSN/WLM for foreign contacts, but is open source unimportant in China? All of them Windows User?

Core debugging in OpenSolaris

I use OpenSolaris nearly exclusively since snv_131 or for about six weeks now. Having used Linux for years, its quite a new world for me, although its similar. After my gnome-panel crashes from time to time I looked around how to find out where exactly it crashes. Under Linux you would have used the backtrace function in gdb, but OpenSolaris uses Sun Studio compilers and is different. I stumbled upon a couple of articles how to do this. Read more »
